“I am not a crook”

Perhaps one of the most famous Nixon quotation from the Watergate era.

On 17 November 1973, on national television President Richard M. Nixon told Associated Press managing editors, who were meeting at Disney World in Orlando, Florida:

“People have got to know whether or not their president is a crook. Well, I’m not a crook.”

Nixon had addressed the nation on the subject of the Watergate break-in for the first time on 30 April 1973.

The Senate Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities, headed by Sen. Sam Ervin (D-NC), began televised hearings into the Watergate scandal on 17 May 1973. The investigation would end the presidency of Richard M. Nixon the following summer, 09 August 1974.
