On 17 November 1973, on national television President Richard M. Nixon told Associated Press managing editors, who were meeting at Disney World in Orlando, Florida:
“People have got to know whether or not their president is a crook. Well, I’m not a crook.”
Nixon had addressed the nation on the subject of the Watergate break-in for the first time on 30 April 1973.
The Senate Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities, headed by Sen. Sam Ervin (D-NC), began televised hearings into the Watergate scandal on 17 May 1973. The investigation would end the presidency of Richard M. Nixon the following summer, 09 August 1974.
