Intel will add wireless networking technology (Wi-Fi) to an upcoming pair of desktop chipsets later this year. Manufacturers will be able to add the foundation for a built-in Wi-Fi access point to one of the sets for almost nothing.
The goal is to move Intel’s flagship product into a central position in the home entertainment network as evidenced by also developing Entertainment PC (EPC), which is based on Microsoft’s WindowsXP Media Center.
Some analysts suggest that the move will put a squeeze on Tivo and RePlay, standalone personal digital video recorders.
