In 2007, Google and YouTube broke into presidential politics by holding a “debate” in conjunction with CNN. At the time, Google had owned YouTube for less than a year.

Flash forward almost five years. On Monday at 5.30 p.m. Eastern, Google+ (which is also less than a year old), is the stage for a presidential response to last week’s State of the Union address. As in 2007, the questions are generated by us. And as in 2007, which questions get answered is not being left in the hands of the crowd.

Think Steve. Now One Of The Crazy Ones

When Steve Jobs stepped down as CEO of Apple in August, AdWeek inserted his pictureinto the 1997 “Crazy Ones” ad narrated by Richard Dryfuss. This needs to be added to my Favorite Steve Jobs & Apple YouTube Clips (August).

Mixing Media: Social Movements and Popular Culture

“When pop music meets politics, the results are often thrilling, sometimes life-changing and never simple,” writes Dorian Lynskey, a music writer for the Guardian. His book, 33 Revolutions Per Minute: A History of Protest Songs, tracks “33 songs that span seven decades and four continents.”

Lynskey begins with Billy Holiday (Strange Fruit, 1939) and ends with Green Day (American Idiot, 2008). Although he features 33 songs, in the appendix he recommends an additional 100 protest songs. You can see the list of 33 (table of contents) and 100 (appendix) at 33 Revolutions per Minute on Amazon.

YouTube promises to publish Super Bowl commercials “the minute they air on Feb 7th.” And to entice you to visit the channel, after the game is over you can vote for your favorite(s) — until Valentine’s Day. Then on 18 February, the winning ad will be featured on the YouTube home page.
