UI: Text v Buttons

A really really long time ago, I remember hearing Jared Spool report usability research that said text links trumped images. I mean, a really long time ago. In the ’90s, I think.

I don’t know if it’s the “button” or its placement on the screen, but I seem to regularly get a headache trying to find “edit” links when they are disguised as buttons. Maybe it’s because button=submit in my mind. In any case, Diigo is the latest example.

Amping The Mind

While many of my peers were breathlessly following the Apple iPad2 announcement, I was online with Howard Rheingold (@hrheingold) and a host of other educators and thinkers from around the world. The occasion was session one of Howard’s MindAmplifier class.

A reminder that every teacher would probably benefit from putting herself in a situation where she is not all-knowing. This nudge came to me as I struggled with my bluetooth headset, which failed to work, and then my login, which also failed to work, initially. Last month, I upgraded from the first generation Jawbone to the Jawbone Icon, Rogue series. I bought it because it could be paired with two devices (my iPhone and my MBP).

After two charging cycles, the bloody thing would not turn on when I needed it for an online video conference.

Who knows why this happens — certainly not me. But I did find a solution that worked for me in the Jawbone forums: a hardware reset.
