The iPad: A Consumption Device
My first reaction to the iPad, as I “consumed” the uStream feed, was this:
Netbook is on “production” side of equation, #ipad is on “consumption” side. It’s a content consumption device. On steroids.
It’s more than 12 hours later, I’ve taught a class where we talked a bit about the iPad in terms of technology evolution/adoption, and I remain firmly fixed in the “it’s a consumption product” camp. But I wanted to take a few minutes and look back at the naysayers in 2007, when Apple launched the iPhone.
Digital Information: Business Models In Flux
Would you pay $5 a week ($260 a year) to subscribe to the online edition of your local newspaper … if the print+digital edition were only $3.98 a week or $1.50 for Sunday? Right, I thought not. You’re not alone. According to the New York Observer, only 35 people have ordered the pricy subscription-only plate on the Newsday menu.
To Curate Or Create?
Down in Half Moon Bay, Robert Scoble started a discussion on Sunday about the value of “creation” versus “curation” — a discussion centered around Wednesday’s media event at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino. Should he attend the Steve Jobs press event and “create” original copy, an eye-witness report? Or should he sit in Half Moon Bay and “curate” news and commentary for his readers? Which path would add the most value?
Curation is a buzz word in journalism and social media circles. I don’t think that curating digital content — news and information — is the same as curating an exhibit of Degas. On the web, we don’t want to see the entirety of each artifact: each article, Tweet, video and op-ed that, in this case, Robert might use to provide us with his unique point of view on Apple’s newest gadget. Instead, we want Robert to pull the best bits (no pun intended) and synthesize them into a coherent narrative.
